VMware HA provides cost-effective high availability for any application
running in a virtual machine, regardless of its operating system
or underlying hardware configuration. VMware HA eliminates the need
for dedicated stand-by hardware and additional software.

Restart Virtual Machines:
VMware HA is a feature-rich product that continuously monitors
all physical servers in a resource pool and restarts virtual machines
affected by server failure.
- Monitors and detects virtual machines for “guest OS” failures
and automatically starts virtual machines after user-specified
intervals.
- Detects server failures automatically, using a “heartbeat”
on servers.
- Restarts virtual machines almost instantly without human
intervention on a different physical server within the same
resource pool.
- Continuously monitors and chooses the optimal physical servers
within a resource pool on which to restart virtual machines
(if used in conjunction with VMware DRS).
VMware HA is included in VMware Infrastructure Enterprise Edition
and can be purchased as an add-on product to the Standard and Starter

VMware High Availability (HA) Feature:
- Scalable high availability across multiple physical servers.
Support up to 32 nodes in a cluster for high application
availability.
- Automatic detection of server failures. Virtual machines
with VMware HA provide an easy to use and cost-effective failover
solution to protect against server failures.
- Enhanced support for monitoring failures within virtual
machines (experimental). VMware HA detects operating system
failures within virtual machines through monitoring heartbeat
information. If a failure is detected, based upon user-defined
time intervals, the affected virtual machine
- Automatic restart of virtual machines. Protect any
application with automatic restart in a different physical server
in the resource pool.
- Improved overall reliability through enhanced isolation
address response. This capability enhances reliability in
confirming network failure on the service console by allowing
multiple addresses to be pinged before declaring that a node
is isolated in the cluster.

- Resource checks. Ensure that capacity is always available
in order to restart all virtual machines affected by server
failure. HA continuously monitors capacity utilization and “reserves”
spare capacity to be able to restart virtual machines.
- Proactive monitoring and health checks. VMware HA
helps VMware Infrastructure users identify abnormal configuration
settings detected within HA clusters. This keeps unhandled failure
conditions and errors from happening more than once. The VMware
Infrastructure client interface reports relevant health status
and potential error conditions and suggested remediation steps.
- Smart failover of virtual machines (when used with
VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler). Automate the optimal
placement of virtual machines to servers with best available
resources after server failure.

Pricing Notes:
- Support and Subscription is mandatory for all VMware
products except VMware Workstation, VirtualCenter for VMware
Server, and VMware Server.
- SLS (Support & Limited Subscription) is priced at 16% and
20% of list price for Gold and Platinum Support, respectively.
Under SLS, customers get full technical support, new minor product
releases and bug fixes on the major product release train at
the time of purchase. Major upgrades are not included under
SLS. (example VI3 to VI4)
- SnS (Support & Subscription) is priced at 21% and 25% of
list price for Gold and Platinum Support, respectively (Pricing
varies for Starter Edition)
- All upgrade SKUs must be purchased with a standard gold
or platinum SLS (Support & Limited Subscription) or SnS (Support
and Subscription) based on the list price of the upgraded product
